Interview with GARNiDELiA

interview - 17.06.2017 10:01

GARNiDELiA is excited about seeing you at their first live show in Los Angeles!

Pop unit GARNiDELiA is no stranger to fans of anime such as "Kill la Kill", "The Irregular at Magic High School", "Gundam Reconguista in G", "GUNSLINGER STRATOS" and "QUALIDEA CODE". On July 1st, GARNiDELiA will perform at Anisong World Matsuri at Anime Expo 2017 in Los Angeles.

Hi GARNiDELiA, you'll be performing at Anisong World Matsuri at Anime Expo 2017, but if you had the chance to check out one attraction at Anime Expo as a regular attendee, what would it be?

MARiA: The cosplays of attendees!

Out of all the anime theme songs you've released, which one speaks the most to you personally? What about it speaks to you?

toku: It is our debut song ambiguous because it is the first song that revealed our existence.

You collaborated with heavy electronica duo HEAVYGRINDER for a song titled BAD BOY on your latest album Violet Cry. Why did you choose to collaborate with HEAVYGRINDER and what was your experience working with HEAVYGRINDER like?

toku: We met with HEAVYGRINDER at a musical event we participated in. We became interested in them through their DJ play style, and music they post on their website. We had a chance to speak with them in a dressing room after the show, and we asked of them if we could actually create a collaborative work together. It is great that our collaboration turned out to be great as we expected.

Your recently released song and dance MV titled Tougen renka incorporates the use of an erhu in the music and features costumes inspired by traditional Chinese clothes. Why did you choose a Chinese theme for Tougen renka?

MARiA: We were thinking about what we could do for our Chinese fans when our one-man live show in China was confirmed. So, we created the song featuring Chinese cultures to express our gratitude to our Chinese fans.

Since Tougen renka features an erhu, can we expect songs from you that feature other traditional music instruments in the future? If so, what traditional music instruments would you like to feature?

toku: I would like to record the actual sounds of an instrument, as well as to personally become a friend with its instrumentalist when I need to write a song that features a traditional musical instrument. These days, I am interested in Arabic musical instruments such as the oud, nay, and kanun. I am also interested in an Indian musical instrument, the tabla.

You released a new single titled SPEED STAR on June 14th. What is the theme or message of this song?

toku: We are honored to continue to be able to create a theme song for the “The Irregular at Magic High School” anime since its was serialized on TV. SPEED STAR is a theme song for the movie of "The Irregular at Magic High School”, coming to theaters soon.

MARiA: The theme of the song is to keep my faith no matter what others say about it. I hope the song encourages you to do so as well.

Are you working on any new material right now?

toku: We are always creating new materials for ourselves, as well as for other projects (laughs). We have plenty of songs we would like you to enjoy listening as soon as possible, so please look forward to them.

To conclude our interview, please leave a message for JaME readers about your upcoming performance at Anisong World Matsuri at Anime Expo 2017.

toku: Please come to the event not only to see our show, but also to enjoy great performances by other artists, as well as the many special events Anime Expo 2017 has to offer. We are looking forward to actually experience such rare opportunities ourselves.

MARiA: I am very excited to be able to have our first live show in LA. I would like to have a great time together with you guys! Please come to Anisong World Matsuri at Anime Expo 2017! We look forward to seeing you.

JaME would like to thank GARNiDELiA, RESONANCE Media and the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation for this interview opportunity.
