SPINALCORD started their career under the name AUSHVITZ in 2002, almost immediately after the metal band VALKYR disbanded. The majority of VALKYR’s former members were also present in AUSHVITZ’s line-up with a few exceptions. The vocalist was one of the members that did not transfer to AUSHVITZ and instead guitarist Syu took up the position of vocalist.
In September 2002 they released their first maxi-single titled Akarui. The maxi-single was limited to 1000 copies and sold out quickly. A few months later, they were featured on the compilation album Yougenkyo -moon-. Two more maxi-singles followed in early 2003, among them a single that was only distributed during their lives. Unfortunately, a few months after the release of Koi yabure, suibotsu in April, it turned silent around the band.
This silence, only shortly interrupted by a few lives once a year, lasted until 2006. In the meantime, Syu worked on various other bands and projects, such as the successful power metal band Galneryus and ANIMETAL, which was dedicated to metal versions of anime songs. He also appeared on a guitar guidebook and DVD for guitar beginners.
It seemed that the band’s hiatus was final, without any possibility of AUSHVITZ returning to the music business again, but fortunately fans were proven wrong when the group made a comeback in June 2006 with the single Haitoku no inori / Shishi metsuretsu and a number of concerts during that autumn.
Unfortunately, this comeback seemed temporary, and as quickly as they had resurfaced, they disappeared again. This time, their official homepage was even taken offline, and there was no reference to AUSHVITZ anymore on Syu’s official website.
However, in the summer of 2008, their career took an interesting turn. Syu had announced in an interview with JaME that the group would be changing their name upon their next release, and sure enough AUSHVITZ became SPINALCORD. In December, they released the single THE SPINALCORD and shortly after the line-up was changed as the band consisted of only three members now: Syu, Kyoichi and a new member: drummer Jun-ichi from Galneryus.
Determined to show that they weren’t going to do another disappearing act, another single followed in April 2009. Soon after, the release of a full album was announced: REMEMBER ME 'TILL YOUR DYING DAY, which is scheduled for release in September. For this album, they chose the term "FUTURHYTHMETAL" to describe their style. All songs on the album have been composed by Syu, and were arranged by SPINALCORD with producer YORIMASA HISATAKE.
Needless to say, SPINALCORD has an interesting history to its name and it’s great to see that they have started anew, with a new name, line-up and most important, new material for their fans to eagerly absorb. The band has already shown in the past they are full of surprises, so we’re curious to see what they will bring us next!
