Spiky

The future leader/vocalist/guitarist of Spiky, masa, was living in New York when he met an enigmatic and charismatic musician by the name of Gackt C. Camui. Gackt convinced masa to be a guitarist in his support band that would later on become what we know today as GacktJOB. The two took a liking to each other rather quickly and before long, masa was known more for his onstage fanservice antics with Gackt rather than his skillful guitar playing. A short time later, masa left to create his own band: Spiky. This enabled masa to be front and center and it gave him much more creative and musical control.

Spiky was created in 2003 and masa was joined by Okamura Dai on guitar, KG (Watanabe Keichi) on keyboards as well as producing, Matchy (Machida Takayuki) on bass and Toshi (Sugino Toshiyuki, also ex Gackt JOB) on drums. Former members include YAMACHI on guitar, Tomo on bass, and Matsukichi on drums.

The band's first release was the maxi Spiky On The Way on September 28th, followed by Confidence, which had a Christmas release date. The year 2003 saw the release of their first full album Spiky To Be. They released a mini album in July and followed with three singles in August and another the following month.

Spiky started 2004 off strong with the release of a single followed by several mini tours and events throughout the rest of the spring and summer months. The mini album Scream in the Sky was released on September 22nd and it left their fans wanting more.

However, at their Y2K Roppongi live just six days later, masa announced that was leaving Spiky to create a new band: DIZZY DRIVE. The remaining members tried to find a new vocalist but failed at finding someone qualified enough to replace him.

masa is now in Marmarsa-mu (DIZZY DRIVE's new name) while the other members are in various musical projects of their own. However, back in August, masa rejoined Spiky for two special nights with different themes: acoustic and electric. Perhaps we'll see more special lives, and hopefully a release or two, in the future from these guys.
