Shulla was formed in January 2001 by Kaito and Sae (both ex-Vaniza and Clair de Lune). They eventually met Nagi (ex-Ludia le Moise), Ren, and Yuuichi. They started out by releasing a demo tape on January 27, which was given out as thanks for the great turnout at the event that marked their debut. Their activity went quiet for a while, with their next appearance almost 6 months later at Takadanobaba AREA.
The first major event was the release of their first maxi single, Nihiko. This very quickly sold out and a second press was released on September 21, which also sold out. On the same day as this second press release, Shulla took the opportunity to release their second maxi single, Itazura. Once again it quickly sold out both the first press and a second released on November 11. To finish 2001, Shulla embarked on their first two-man tour with the band Ash, ending with finale at Takadanobaba AREA in October.
The year 2002 kicked off with their participation in a number of events, but the most remarkable was their new year release yukuefumei. This first mini-album was limited to 2000 copies and similar to the two previous singles, the speed with which it sold out ensured a second press followed in April. Shulla was rapidly growing more popular as they expanded their activities into many different venues.
On July 12, Shulla launched their summer tour of 16 dates that ended with their first one-man at Shibuya O-West. On July 24, their on-tour maxi single furare hanabi was released. It came with one video and was limited to 3000 copies.
The releases continued coming steadily as 2003 began. On January 6 the band sold a demo tape titled kimikara hajimaru A no uta, which was sold at a live and limited to 500 copies. This was shortly followed by the release of Shura, their second mini-album and another that quickly sold out. Its second press was released on June 25. Later on, the group went on tour from March 12 until May 11 with a hefty schedule that encompassed much of the country, ensuring Shulla would be noticed.
Swiftly after the successful one-man tour came their first inclusion in the stylish wave'03 tour, during which they played with a number of other groups. They barely took a break before three further one-man concerts (in Tokyo Nagoya and Osaka) and the August 28 release of their fourth maxi-single, Kanashibari Tengoku. Then, on September 21, Shulla took part in the compilation omnibus, SHOCK JAM CD Edition.1. It seemed like they were continuously touring, finishing out the year with a winter tour and a final trio of one-man lives. Despite this, they still found time to release more CDs as on November 12, the single ENJYOU REKKA was released. Following this release, their stage performances soared through further lives and events of all kinds.
In 2004, Shulla was involved in Cannonball Vol.1 and were on this CD omnibus with groups such as Doremidan, Unzu and Sendai Kamotsu. February brought happiness for Shulla, as they made it to the Oricon charts for the first time. KARYU KUURO originally ranked 20th, moved up to 9th after the release date. In between this and the release of two albums, Shulla joined Loop Ash group, SCISSOR for a two-man live. These next two albums were 'best-of' releases, CHABANGEKI SONO ICHI on April 21, and CHABANGEKI SONO NI on April 28. The reason for the 'best-ofs' soon became apparent; in June, Shulla turned major after signing with Nippon Crown. With that, they released their first major maxi single, shirokuro no sekai, in July. Its two versions were released simultaneously. On September 29, they released another maxi single, Chibi, with two versions.
On April 1, 2005, they released their maxi single Prism but shockingly when all had seemed well, they suddenly announced their disbandment at the July 22 live at O-West, a live that was rather ominously titled Countdown. Their final activity came by way of a final album [Shulla] ~Never too late to change and a best-of in October and November of 2005. Their final concert, the Grand Finale was at Shibuya O-East on November 21, 2005 with a concert DVD The Grand Finale was released on January 11, 2006.
