After the visual kei band WERKMARE disbanded, their guitarist Nachi decided to form a band together with vocalist KYOTARO (ex Volark). So in August of 2004 √eight was created. Later they were joined by bassist mukku, who also played in WERKMARE, and drummer mitsuru (ex ArcAdiA).
They released their first maxi single, sensenfukoku, on August 24th, which sold out that day. To commemorate, the band started on the Endless tour. Two months later their second maxi musou ranbu was released, which also sold out immediately.
In February 2005 the maxi single yuigadokuson came out and a few months later √eight had their first one-man concert at Meguro Rockmaykan. In December of that year, the band presented a compilation album which contained songs of other bands from their home town, Sapporo, named RADICALS CHARGE. Four days after that release guitarist Nachi created his own indies label relative+heart MUSIC.
After the release of their fourth single in December of 2005, √eight's activity was quiet until the release of their debut album illational in September 2006. This CD reached 11th place on the Oricon indies album chart.
In March 2007 they gave another one-man performance in Tokyo, this time in the Shinjuku Holiday. During that concert they announced their new member: the guitarist RYO (ex since1889). By June,√eight embarked on the ANTI JAP MONSTERS tour, which was soon followed by three concerts celebrating their third anniversary at the Holiday venues in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. That year the band also announced their name would change from √eight to THE EIGHT.
In December, vocalist KYOTARO announced he was leaving the band, and soon moved to the band Black:List. The activity of the band suffered as a result and they had little activity over the next year, and by summer their new guitarist, RYO also left the band. Despite the losses, the THE EIGHT persevered and found a new vocalist, U.
The band picked back up touring through 2009 but were again put through hardship when their drummer, mitsuru sustained an injury and had to refrain from performing. However, by August he had returned and the band resumed their live activity.
On Christmas eve, THE EIGHT announced that their final performance would be on January 17, 2010, much to the dismay of their fans.
