Sugar was formed in 2005 by Loki (ex-Vall'na Racill), Sizna, Koto and Atsuto. They had been making music since mid-2004 but they officially started their activities on February 1st, 2005. Their first CD, ridicule/Dry Flower, was given away for free at a concert in February and also in various indie CD shops; it was limited to only 500 copies.

Sugar played numerous concerts around Tokyo in 2005, and on August 9th, they performed at a event called Kuro ari to shirozatou to mark the upcoming release of their first maxi-single, mental sketch modified, which was released on August 17th and sold out in no time.

On May 6th, they held a three-man concert with Calmando Qual and The Candy Spooky Theater. These three bands made a tripling single together, Mikkai, where every band had one song each. Mikkai became very popular among Sugar fans and they started getting more and more attention from new fans as well.

On July 26th, they released their first mini-album, Grave of Mind, and they also began a new tour, called Distance to grave of mind, that same month.

In November they started a short two-man tour Darker meets Deeper with emmurée, which ended at Takadanobaba AREA on November 10th. They were also joined by Nega and hurts for two concerts. During this tour, Sugar released the coupling single which featured one original song and one cover by each band; this single was limited to 1000 copies. They continued playing concerts and attending events, and to end 2006, on Christmas Eve they were invited to join Kamijo and Kanoma at their Winter Romantic Fes.3days [X-day] event.

They also released a new single, Yokusou, on July 7th, which included their first PV. Only a few weeks later, the single earned them first place on Oricon's indies chart. For the rest of July, Sugar attended various in-store events, holding concerts in between.

Starting on September 15, they had a one-man tour named after their next single, sweet circus. People who attended any of the concerts of the tour were able to get a copy of their new single which was available in different CD covers depending on the venue location.

They began 2008 with a new single, Blossom, and full length album SWEETEST. The news was announced that bassist Koto would be leaving the band due to disagreements in opinions over the future of Sugar. The last live he played with them was in December of that year. Shortly after he was replaced by a new face, Shingo. 2008 proved to be a very busy and hectic year for them as they also produced in pain in April, Antlion their unplugged single featuring acoustic tracks in June, and ruddy afterglow in July.
