aphasia was formed by the drummer, jun, and guitarist, TEN, in 1995. The band performed for the first time in 1996 and soon after that, new member, goe, became the permanent guitarist. Jun, goe and the vocalist, Yumi (who later changed her name to luka), formed the core of the group as their bassist kept changing. The following year they participated in a compilation called Women's Power FIRST, in the middle of releasing their own demo tapes.

Their first album, Mirage on the Ice, came out in December 1999, though a bigger success awaited them until the recording of their Wings of Fire album in 2001. At that point the band had their first one-man live, giving aphasia the chance to really try out their own set of wings. They indeed took the members all the way to the noted record label King Records. The band was signed at the end of 2002, and released their next two full length albums, Labyrinth in My Heart, and their most praised release, Wild & Innocent, which arrived in stores in 2004, while on the label.

A year later the group confirmed that they would continue their career as a three member line-up. As helping hands they have two steady session members, keyboardist, Maya (nowadays called Maki), and bassist, Saki, who was an official member for a few months in 2001. At the end of the year they released their new mini album, Mirage 2005, which included several tracks from their debut album, Mirage on the Ice, as new versions.

aphasia's fifth album, Gambler, was released in August 2006.
