In February 2001, Tomomi Naban, Miyoko Yamaguchi and Nobuaki Kotajima formed detroit7. The trio began with a first concert at Club 251 in Tokyo. It was not until September 19, 2002 that the indie group released their debut album, Ordinary Madness. It was a good start for detroit7; the 100 copies of the album sold out within three months.
The year 2002 was a sign of hope and 2003 was fairly loaded. detroit7 accompanied bands like Black Rebel and Reef on stage. The group increased its popularity by participating in several music events. In September, the trio began its first tour across Japan. detroit7 also composed new songs that appeared on the mini-album, Vertigo, released on November 26. Finally, to finish the year in style, the group participated in the event COUNTDOWN JAPAN 03/04.
In 2004, detroit7 continued to perform on stage. Notably, the group performed a tour with Shonen Knife in February. On May 12th, they released their first maxi-single, COME ON. The same year, detroit7 participated again in the famous event COUNTDOWN JAPAN 04/05.
On January 26, 2005 they released the album 1 LOVE. The same month, detroit7 gave their first solo concert entitled 1LOVE, 1LIVE at Club 251 in Tokyo. The second 1LOVE, 2LIVE was also held at the same place four months later. On July 21, detroit7, who just turned major by signing with label Victor Entertainment, released their first single, detroit7 EP Vol.1. The group then went on to join several events during the summer, including Summer Sonic 05 and Rising Sun Festival.
The year 2006 marked a new tour called Full Drive 06 which took them to cities all over Japan. On November 29, they released their first major album, GREAT Romantic. The following year, detroit7 spent most of their time on stage. No composition saw the light of day but various people had the opportunity to meet the group at the HIT & RUN Matsuri-chan event as well as for many other events. It wasn't until early 2008 that they finally released a new mini-album, Third Star From The Earth.
detroit7 did not do things by half measures in 2009. After releasing the album simply titled detroit7, the trio embarked on a world tour, Black & White World Tour 2009, from March until July. This was an opportunity for the band to perform abroad and conquer France, where the trio had the chance to play a show at the famous French event Bourges.
On January 20, 2010, they released a best-of album and a mini-album. detroit7 made another visit to France during March as part of a tour with no less than twelve concerts. Having caught the attention of the band the Bellrays, the two bands came together for a tour in France in November and December, and also performed in the Czech Republic along with Vypsaná Fixa and InspectorCluzo.
