school food punishment were formed in October 2004 and immediately focused their activities in the livehouses within the Shinjuku District. The band steadily continued to create a name for themselves and in 2008, widened their activities with appearances at the FM802 hosted event MINAMI WHEEL 2008 and the J-WAVE sponsored concert TOKYO REAL-EYES LIVE SUPERNOVA.

Later that year, school food punishment released their third mini-album Riff-rain in limited quantities via retail music chain Tower Records. The mini-album was an unprecedented success, catapulting the band to the #1 position on Tower Records J-Indies Weekly Chart and within a week, resulted in the mini-album being sold out throughout the music chain.

In early 2009, Riff-rain was released on a national scale throughout Japan and school food punishment embarked on a tour in support of the mini-album. In March, the band was chosen to participate on a tribute album to JUDY & MARY and recorded a cover of the track Brand New Wave Upper Ground.

In the following months, the group released their first major single futuristic imagination. In July, school food punishment was introduced to a global audience with an appearance at the pop culture festival Japan EXPO in France. That same month, the band released their second maxi single butterfly swimmer. The title track, which was featured in a commercial for Healthya Sparkling drink attracted nationwide attention and made school food punishment a widely recognized name.

Despite being new faces in the music industry, the band were invited to perform at the SUMMER SONIC rock festival with an appearance in Tokyo on August 7th and in Osaka on August 8th. The following months were littered with several single releases and in April 2010, the group released their debut major album amp-reflection. The album achieved relative success for the band, peaking in the Oricon Top 10 and selling in excess of 30,000 copies.

Following the album’s release, the group went on their first one-man tour with each date being completely sold out. The band also went on to perform at notable rock festivals ROCK IN JAPAN and the RISING SUN. That year, school food punishment were also asked to write the theme song for Konaka Kazuya’s film adaptation of the science fiction novel Nanase futatabi. In response to the request, the band penned the track flashback trip syndrome.

In May 2011, school food punishment released their sixth single RPG, the title track of which was used the ending theme for the televised anime C. The group have also recently announced that they will release their second major album entitled Prog-Roid in July.

With their tenacious blend of electro-pop combined with moving lyrics, school food punishment has proved themselves to be one of the band’s at the forefront of this musical niche. With their activities showing no signs of slowing, the band seems set to continue creating their infectious music for years to come.
