Visual kei band METEOROID have decided to celebrate their first anniversary with a one-man at Shibuya REX on the 11th of February, exactly one year after their [Gemini Program] 1st program performance here.

The venue is filled with fans, many of them with green glow sticks that become clearly visible when the hall darkens. Lights cover the stage in green when the intro starts playing and it doesn’t take long before the members walk onstage and the audience claps, welcoming the band. This immediately stops when vocalist GENKI starts singing the characteristic tune of Dracula and fans grab their towels and hold them up, spinning them around.

Yutori makes gestures towards the public, hops around on stage, poses, and seems born to entertain. The audience can’t get enough of him. The fans soon start jumping from the left side of the venue to the right and perform all kinds of hand and arm gestures along the music. Yutori knows the gestures and joins the fans from time to time when he isn’t playing.

In the second MC GENKI asks the band members what they think of their one-man concert, and their answers make many audience members laugh and giggle. Drummer Tomoya starts playing a catchy rhythm after the talk has ended, with the crowd joining him by clapping along. Both guitarists clap along with the audience before one of them starts playing along with the drummer. Then the bassist, too, hits the snares and plays along with the rhythm. The song feels incomplete, but slowly, it comes together as instruments are added. It’s the start of DOKU-SOW, a catchy and happy song with a headbanging portion in it. GENKI stands with a tambourine in his hands while he’s singing, and finally completes the song.

BALLERINA starts off with a grunt and in no time the whole venue is headbanging along with the music. The stage is covered in green, while the members are in pink, almost purple light, and this contrast in colors creates a strange feel. The floor starts shaking slightly as fans jump up and down and from side to side again. Everybody seems to give their all, including the members, as they start headbanging and move around onstage, switching places with each other.

“Thank you”, GENKI yells to the audience, who cheer and applaud as the band leaves the stage. Tomoya and Yutori hang around for a bit longer before they too vacate. While the members take a breather backstage, a screen is extracted, and fans sit down, waiting for the short movie to start. New lives are announced, as well as METEOROID’s first album. Then the screen is drawn up and the members are standing behind it, ready for the encore.

DIVER is played for the second time this evening, this time closing the concert. The song is the first single the band released and it seems to be one of their most popular tracks. GENKI asks the audience to sing along this time too. They give the song a twist this time, because suddenly the loud noises are replaced by softly strummed chords. The vocalist continues singing, slowly and softly, and tries to get the fans singing along with him. At a certain moment, the music stops and the crowd sings a cappella for a while, creating a cozy feel before another sudden change in ambience when the band begins playing fast and loud again and the fans immediately take up headbanging once more to match the shift in sound.

“Thank you. Thank you REX!” the vocalist exclaims. A photographer comes onto the stage and the band takes a picture with the audience before the curtain drops and their anniversary concert comes to a close. Not only was the live entertaining, but fans also have something big to look forward to this year: METEOROID’s first album.
