Whether you’re young or old, all are fascinated by the circus and love to see one, even though with audience numbers in decline, circuses have become something of a luxury. Could this be why five-member idol group STARMARIE have produced the new single Who Killed Circus (Circus wo koroshitano wa dareda)?

Contrary to what you might expect from an idol group like STARMARIE, the single’s title track starts out on a scary note, with a chilling scream followed by a melody reminiscent of genuine circus music. Bright and spooky synthesizer melodies, emulating the sound of an organ, fuse with the full voices of the five girls, who ask "where" and "who" in turn. The chorus provides a welcome reprieve from the all-permeating darkness of the verses, thanks to a joyously uptempo shift in the melody.

Kuruoshiki gekka no butou kai begins softly, with just a solitary music box playing, making the track strongly resemble a lullaby. This all changes a few seconds later, and it turns into a romantic number, accompanied by bright synthesizers, a strong bass line and unobtrusive electric guitar. Interestingly within the lyrics, the word "nemuri" (sleeping) can be heard, strengthening the initial impression of a lullaby. The third and final track, Youmei 124nichi no Cinderella, opens in a similar fashion to its predecessors. It starts with just a hooting owl and other noises typical of nighttime, but then shimmering synthesizer chords break in once again, uniting a fast dynamic beat with the STARMARIE girls’ cheerful vocals.

All three songs are unexpectedly entertaining, each having their own novel charms. However, the title track Circus wo koroshita no ha dare da is especially interesting, and is by far the most atmospheric. If you're looking for a fun, light listen with a touch of quaintness, this single might be the perfect one for you.
