A band’s fifth birthday party must be celebrated loudly – in concert with their biggest hits, debuting new songs, and as a one-man gig lasting two hours on stage. For the band ZIZ, this celebration Salon du Detéster # 12 was unleashed onto the fans alongside promotion for the new mini-album TEZL MOZL No.5 released just the day before.

On May 27th, 2017 at Zirco Tokyo the members of ZIZ had beaten their own record by performing 27 songs to which they admitted was the most tracks they had performed on stage in one show. It was to be expected from such a celebratory concert marking five years of playing together and it was necessary to find room in the setlist to premiere new tracks from the latest mini-album. It was definitely fitting that they played all five new songs – each member wrote one song on TEZL MOZL No.5 and it certainly can’t be faulted for lacking variety. It’s fresh, original and very energetic.

However, the live started softly with the song NEIGHBORING which briefly introduced the audience to a peaceful mood before ramping up the energy. After his first MC, Közi, who until then only sang and danced, grabbed his guitar and together with the band played a few songs from the fresh mini-album. The reaction from the fans was enthusiastic – a sign that the new songs were well-received.

After that it only got better – nobody had time to be bored, because one of the strongest aspects of ZIZ is undoubtedly their ability to combine different genres without losing its rocky authenticity and style. Punk rock, jazz, dance, and even reggae elements could be found during the performance. The aesthetic freedom also applied to the costumes the band wore on stage. Although the members insisted that they don’t give too much attention to their looks, it was hard to believe them considering that each one looked really good in their own way. By far the most attention was given to guitarist Jiro on this night.

The experience and craftsmanship by the members of ZIZ guaranteed superb performances on stage but, despite this, there was also a little bit of craziness to be had. During the performance for the song SND (Super Naked Disko) drummer Chargeeeeee... stopped drumming, grabbed the microphone and helped Közi with warming up the already riled up audience.

The thrilling show was closed by two slightly calmer songs which in the case of ZIZ, comes from the expressive rhythm section of bassist Sugiya and drummer Chargeeeeee..., and made even the quiet songs sound energetic and strong. During this finale the band came back on stage in specially designed t-shirts for their fifth birthday. Keyboardist and guitarist Yugami designed them in the style reminiscent of classic cult rock bands from the 80s and 90s. Fans who wanted to look as good as ZIZ in these t-shirts had to stand in a long queue after the show in order to purchase one. Nonetheless, the fans looked more than satisfied and all signs suggested that the birthday concert celebration was a smashing success.

Salon du Detéster # 12 pleased not only the faithful listeners of ZIZ, who were able to hear almost all of their favorite songs thanks to a meticulously crafted set list, but also those who came to listen to ZIZ for the first time. The repertoire was rich enough to let new fans become acquainted with all five-years’ worth of music and hard work by the band in just a single night.
