Interview with Mana

In the V.I.P corner of the French event Japan Expo 2004, we had the opportunity to meet and interview Mana, the one who everybody was talking about since his appearance at the Expo was confirmed. This was the first time that Mana was interviewed by someone outside of Japan.

When Mana came in, we only had one word to describe him: amazing! Despite his wedge shoes, Mana seems to be tall and above all, impressive. This impression was all the more evident as he was wearing his stage regalia and had charm and charisma that all the gothic lolitas in attendance couldn't possibly hold a candle to.

In order to respect the schedule of the planned show, we were only given twenty minutes. We started the interview quickly after greetings and an introduction of ourselves.

Could you tell us your first impressions about your stay in France and also about the atmosphere of the Japan Expo?
Mana: I'm very happy with my stay in France and also to see that many young people are interested in Japanese culture.

You've recently made membership to your fan club, Mon Amour, available to your International fans. How did this idea occur to you?
Mana: We received numerous emails on out website from fans around the world wanting to join. It was also my intention to export our music to other countries.

We see many French words in Malice Mizer and Moi dix Mois' lyrics and other works. Could you explain to us why?
Mana: I've always loved France and I think that the French landscapes are beautiful. Moreover, I have always felt that I was very close to the French culture and, for me, it's my main source of inspiration.

So, is this the first time you've been to France?
Mana: No, this is the second. My first trip was in 1997 for the making of a Malice Mizer PV.

We know that you are a fan of Mylène Farmer. (note: a French singer) Would you like to work with her?
- At that moment, Mana graced us with a smile! -
Mana: Yes, I would really like to meet and work with her.

Can you tell us about your musical debut and your influences?
Mana: I started out in High School and at the time I was influenced by Mötley Crue.

How would you define your musical style? Is it visual kei or gothic?
Mana: Being categorized as either visual kei or gothic doesn't bother me at all. But, I don't think I am the leader of any musical style. I just love creating a mix of classical and rock music.

Do you intend to perform all over Europe?
Mana: Yes, I really would like perform all around Europe in 2004. Or, if that is too soon, sometime in 2005.

Is Moi dix Mois the continuation of Malice Mizer?
Mana: No, absolutely not. Moi dix Mois is my solo project and completely different from Malice Mizer.

What are the future projects for Midi:Nette?
Mana: I am currently searching for new bands to sign to the label that have a musical style that would please me to produce them.

Could you say something for your European fans?
Mana: From now on, we will be producing our CDs and also thinking about the fact that they will be released in Europe. I hope you will be looking forward to it. I would be delighted to meet you during our future tour in Europe.

Thank you very much for this interview. We are thrilled by the opportunity to meet you.

Mana nodded and that was the end of this too short interview.

Special thanks to Pierre-Yves Devroute from Japan Expo.
