Megamasso - Matataku Yoru

The magical second album from Megamasso.

Megamasso's second full-length album is an exceptionally pleasurable listen. With songs featuring everything from beautifully sung lyrics to heavy guitar riffs and plenty in between, Matataku yoru is truly a feast for the ears.

The release starts off with Miyoruku(mjolk) as a whimsical introduction leads in to a guitar driven instrumental before Inzargi takes over. Optimistic vocals and an upbeat rhythm provide for a magical first track on Megamasso's sophomore album.

LIPS, one of the best tracks on the album, features mesmerizing guitar work; subtle at times, but powerful when necessary. A throbbing bass line acts as the perfect backdrop for Inzargi's sweetly sung lyrics that seem to float along with steady drumbeats. The chorus in particular exudes an uplifting tone as a feeling of anticipation takes over. The music comes to a climax with Ryohei's expertly played solo mid-way through the song. Inzargi's soft voice closes out the track, lingering just long enough to make hearts flutter as the sound of instruments fade away.

Heavier guitar riffs characterize monoeye old team, a song that, although brimming with Inzargi's always harmonious vocals, has a harder sound than the previous songs. Gou's bass line is particularly stand-out here, deep and rich; perfectly matched with foot-tapping drum work.

The happy rhythms of Ame gakkitai should be enough to make any listener smile. This track evokes positive feelings, from the sparkling synthesized sounds to the bouncing bass line, seeming to encourage the listener to keep on moving. Inzargi sings with a certain amount of urgency that only furthers the atmosphere of this quick listen. Put a whammy is another taste of the band’s brighter side, a rollicking number that should get the listener dancing. A certain feeling of longing is present throughout and Inzargi's voice shines like a star.

Gymnasium is another one of the harder rock songs on the album. Inzargi shows off the versatility of his voice: dark and deep in the verses while soaring up in the chorus. Fast-paced drumming keeps the track moving along and Ryohei's adeptly played solo is a highlight in the middle. The heavier music provides a different dimension to Megamasso's style.

Nostalgic ambience envelopes the listener as Yuki koko yashi begins, showing off the sentimental side of Megamasso. Beautifully played guitar chords, Gou's subtle bass line, and Inzargi's heavenly vocals give the listener a feeling of being in another place, a blissful though temporary escape.

a winter's day certainly reflects that particular season. Crisp acoustic playing backs Inzargi's smooth vocals in a magically executed introduction. Electric and acoustic instrumentals alternate and combine with strings as the perfect compliment to cool vocals that bring to mind visions of a snowy day.

Traditional elements mix with growling guitar riffs in Menou. Inzargi's voice takes on a seemingly operatic quality, a further display of his vocal prowess. The pounding drum work is a highlight to this fast-paced track that will likely have listeners head banging in their seats.

Hoshi furi machi nite is a balmy song characterized by gorgeous guitar work, a bold, but not overpowering bass line, and sublime vocals. Ryohei's playing is particularly impressive, perfectly polished and complimentary to the other elements of the song. Moving along effortlessly, the song serves as another example of how multifaceted Megamasso is. Modern amplifier starts with an airy vocal and acoustic intro. A light-hearted aura dances amidst splendid guitar work, lively drumming, and confident vocals. The instrumental ending is definitely pleasing as well.

The album closes on a soft note. Longing and wanting embodies Inzargi's normally cheerful vocals in Love you so…. This heartfelt track is the epitome of what a good rock ballad is: gentle yet powerful. Ryohei's guitar solo acts as the perfect break and a definitive element in this gorgeously executed love song. With emotion welling from every word sung, every guitar strum, this is a very satisfactory ending to the release.

From pop to hard rock, upbeat to sentimental, Megamasso has something to offer any listener with the release of Matataku yoru. With charming vocals, magical rhythms, and a style all their own, Megamasso has produced another musical masterpiece, a whole new set of sounds to add to their rapidly growing repertoire. This album is definitely something for fans to enjoy and the band to be proud of.
