In the autumn of last year,
miyavi traveled to the USA for his training. This year he joined
S.K.I.N. and released a single followed by a national tour after a two year break... Currently he is very busy, especially after
Neo Visualizm. He has released a new single,
Subarashiki kana, kono sekai-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD-, on November 14th, and he announced an one man live at C.C.Lemon Hall (formerly Shibuya Koukaidou), where he performed his solo debut live, on December 25th.
miyavi, who is still evolving, talks in this interview about how he feels now.
You’ll release a new single. I personally think the lyrics of Subarashiki kana, kono sekai-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD-
are great.
miyavi: Did you like them?(laugh)
I thought "I think so too". In the main melodies, there is a part "The earth keeps turning round and round even if I wasn’t here". Everyone dies someday but you never take a dim view of that
so why not keep smiling? I thought it really matched. miyavi, you change the negative to a positive.
miyavi: That’s great! I don’t think that I need to explain the lyrics of this song, but I think that in this saturated society, where humans are tired of living, it's just a side effect brought by peace. Peace sounds very nice. However, everything has two sides to it, the front and the reverse, and I think even in peace there are evils, which take the edge of human vitality for living.
I thought the lyrics were very easy to understand, like your interviews.
miyavi: I’m trying to do that these days. It has been like that since
Sakihokoru hana no you ni-Neo Visualizm-. I haven’t changed what I say. The difference is whether or not I can make it easy for others to understand.
In Subarasiki kana, kono sekai-WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD-
, were you able to express what you wanted to in the lyrics?
miyavi: Yes, but it was hard! The lyrics all rhyme somehow, which makes the rhythm. I think my time in L.A. really helped me with that, I mean the way I express myself.
The lyrics of visual kei songs often tell us "You must...", but I think you manage to put in other elements very well.
miyavi: I really feel so, too.
For example, there are many 'Kotoba Otaku' (word nerds) among hip hop artists. Your ideas are similar to them and it’s really interesting.
miyavi: However, I have to be careful not to use common words too regularly, because it makes everything flat and boring. What is most important to me is the meaning of my lyrics, even if it doesn't rhyme. People don’t listen to western music making a point of the lyrics so much, which I also do, because the sounds and puns of the words are more important in western music. As there are many fans that read the lyric cards, listen to the message and sympathize with me, I think the meaning which I sing should be really concrete and understandable.
