L'Arc~en~Ciel - DRINK IT DOWN

Most of L’Arc~en~Ciel’s singles become popular hits immediately, and their newest release, DRINK IT DOWN, is proving no exception. Released on April 2nd, the single debuted at number one on the Oricon charts, which is a great way for the band to start 2008.

The title track DRINK IT DOWN starts with eerie electronic trilling and skipping drum beats. The intro sets the haunted house atmosphere, but as HYDE’s low, throbbing vocals kick in, the song slips from being just spookily techno to being elegantly, darkly rock. The electronic vocal echoes further the overall creepiness of the track and also serves to highlight HYDE’s smooth natural voice. In lieu of a regular guitar solo, the instrumental break features heavy drumming by yukihiro and slamming guitar chords. A powerful, emotional song, it’s no wonder DRINK IT DOWN is also used as the theme song for the video game Devil May Cry 4.

The second song on the single is by L’Arc~en~Ciel’s alter-ego, P’UNK~EN~CIEL. Dune 2008 is more standard rock fare, but it’s enjoyable with its fast pace and wailing guitar riffs. tetsu’s lighter voice is easy on the ears and the track features a neat guitar solo by HYDE. However, the arrangement of the song is what makes it addicting: the choppy breaks, frequently repeated chords and liberal use of the whammy keep the listener hooked.

Instrumental versions of both tracks are also included on the CD.

The release of DRINK IT DOWN shows that L’Arc~en~Ciel is still going strong. And with TOUR 2008 L'7~Trans ASIA via PARIS~ less than three weeks away, fans can look forward to hearing the songs performed live, which will surely be a treat!
