A live report from Megamasso's first concert of their 'Chelly of 14 water tanks' one-man tour at LIQUIDROOM ebisu on March 21.
LIQUIDROOM turned out to be a pretty nice hall with stairs on each side and a stage so high up that even the people all the way in the back could see the band. The venue, playing host to a sold out concert, quickly filled up and, just ten minutes before the band took the stage, was jammed with excited fans. The lights dimmed moments before the show started and an intro was played over the speakers. It was time for Megamasso to start playing the first concert of their 'Chelly of 14 water tanks' ~WinTerr ties 2 SpRinGG~ one-man tour.
The crowd, which included almost as many boys as girls, went wild as the curtains were pulled away and Megachu came into view on a huge banner, now lit up by spotlights. The band members came on stage one by one, Ryohei wearing a red tutu skirt, Inzargi in a shiny red shirt and Gou looking rather stylish in a velvet jacket.
The concert began with Namida Neko and, before the first chorus of the song, it was already apparent that fans of Megamasso truly love the band's music. Inzargi’s voice was powerful, maybe even better than on CD, and while Ryohei blew kisses to the audience, Gou seemed to be mostly focused on playing his bass. Throne Angel was the next song and, following a lot of jumping and singing, it was time for an MC/SE. During this part, Inzargi ran across the stage shouting 1, 2, 3, 4! and asking the audience to jump and shout along with him, a request that was so enthusiastically responded to that it felt like the whole venue was about to crash. This feeling didn’t go away as they launched into Ame gakkitai, one of their many happy songs. put a whammy gave the fans a chance to breathe and relax while the band, as usual, gave their all on stage. Inzargi's vocal talents were showed off during this song and Ryohei got the to play a short, but effective guitar solo while the spotlight lit up his already glowing guitar.
After an MC, Ryohei’s glow-in-the-dark guitar was replaced by an acoustic guitar and the band played Oborozuki. It was a beautiful song that allowed Inzargi to make full use of his powerful vocals. To make the atmosphere just right, the lights were dimmed and the flashes stopped but the band's performance was definitely memorable. After that, Megamasso returned to their faster songs, which included Tou wa kouyou suru and the catchy Hoshi furi machi nite. The intro of the latter was so slow that it sounded like a ballad, but as soon as Ryohei started playing the song's incredibly catchy riffs, it was obvious what was about to happen. For a moment, one could only see hands in the air, mimicking the fun furitsuke that Inzargi started doing.
The cute hand movements were replaced by a sea of hair and pounding fists as soon as Imomushi no nushi started. Fast synth, hard bass riffs and, on top of that, Inzargi’s voice, provided the feeling of suddenly being at a metal concert. Ryohei head banged and spun around so much that he almost lost balance, but it was obvious that he really enjoyed himself on stage. The next song included something that is probably the strangest thing one could witness at a visual kei concert. Sweet Skin Like Candy started with a hard guitar riff and powerful singing from Inzargi, but out of nowhere, two hip-hop dancers came on stage and joined the vocalist in a dance routine. The idea of dancers such as these performing during a rock concert is odd enough, but these dancers made it even stranger as they were dressed thoroughly in hip-hop style with leather jackets, trucker caps, wife beaters and of course, a lot of bling. Inzargi joined them in their hip-hop dancing, which looked a lot like something you would see at an idol concert or Johnny’s Entertainment live. Inzargi was a very good dancer and, even though he used a lot of energy to sing, he still danced like dancing was in his blood.
The MC that followed lowered the tempo and the band played Modern Amplifier and LIPS before the three band members hugged each other and left the stage. The call for an encore started immediately and Megamasso returned to the stage wearing their tour t-shirts, which were black with silver writing down the shoulder and across the chest giving it the illusion of being water.
Gou appeared first on stage and stood there alone for a couple of minutes before he decided to sit next to Ryohei’s microphone. The cheerful guitarist appeared on stage with his usual smile and, after a short chat between the two members, Inzargi showed up to much applause from the audience. While Inzargi spoke to the fans, Gou and Ryohei were busy taking photos of themselves behind Inzargi’s back. They played Shibou no katamari and then the beautiful Paradise Halo, the chorus of which was extended by the fans, whose voices were accompanied by heart shapes formed with their hands as they sang the final word, "daisuki". The band members smiled from ear to ear as their fans sang in perfect time during this very touching moment.
After the band left the stage, a voice over the speakers explained that the live was not over. A few minutes later, the curtains were pulled away and the band stood for the first time on stage as their alter-ego band, Megamachu, which involves the members being dressed in mouse suits. They played Osare Cat Showbiz, with Ryohei on chorus, and Futatsu no Dangan, a new song from their Ninki Ongen Shuu album, before Kiss Me Chu Chu, the final song of the evening. The hip-hop dancers came back, also dressed in mouse suits, but with their leather jackets and bling layered over them, for the last song. Together they, as well as Inzargi, danced as everyone in the hall sang and danced along until Megamasso put away their instruments, thanked the audience and left the stage, leaving their fans still hungry for more.
Everyone who attended the concert, got a free gift at the exit, which included a set of fliers in a white bag with Megamasso’s logo at the bottom.
Megamasso is a band that has, since its formation in 2006, gathered a rather large fan base, due not only to the fact that it is made up of talented individuals who never stop surprising and pleasing their fans, but also in part to each member's lovable personality. It is truly a band that everyone should see live, if not only for the music, then for the fantastic show that the three of them put on together.
