ZZ - Just Only One/Samurai Crew

Just Only One/Samurai Crew demonstrates ZZ's originality and strength in genre mixing.

Just Only One/Samurai Crew is a single from late 2004, one of ZZ's later singles as the last one was in 2006. Lately, we haven't heard much from the decade old group, but this release provides a taste representative of their sound and will whet your appetite for more.

The opener, Just Only One, is a light rock song of glinting guitars and poignant melodies that also incorporates a light hearted hip hop feel. Vocalist SOTARO transitions seamlessly from rapping to singing, doing both with apparent ease and experience. The emotional guitar solo echoes DJ KAORI's comforting message of "I'm here by your side" and overall, the song creates a soothingly inspirational atmosphere.

The second track is even more intriguing, mixing styles and atmospheres in a zany but cohesive melting pot. Samurai Crew opens with a Japanese flute solo and then transforms into a keyboard-laden section with a 70's psychedelic feel and laid back rapping. The bridge into the chorus and the chorus itself are both heavier with harder guitars, featuring shouting and then earnest singing. Again, ZZ delivers intriguing and beautiful melodies, combining them with a rocking beat and stylish urban flair. This song in particular shows off the band's originality and their ability to create something new that sets them apart.

The instrumental versions of the tracks make for excellent background music, and Samurai Crew in particular remains strong, even without vocals. Overall, this single offers a glimpse into the world of ZZ's vibrant, feel-good music that will undoubtedly leave you wanting more. Although their last album was in 2007, we really hope to see some more from this band in the future.
