Koda Kumi's first truly successful single is appropriately titled a miracle.
Though Koda Kumi started her career in December 2000, it wasn't until Kiseki that she achieved complete success in Japan. This maxi-single was released in July 2004 and contains three songs: Kiseki, used as the theme song for NHK's television program J-League, LOVE HOLIC, used as the ending theme for TBS' Sekari Bari Bari Value, and finally, Life. There are also instrumental versions of the three songs on the same CD.
The title song, Kiseki, begins with a high pitched sound coming from far away and getting closer by the minute. This gives the impression that the song is going to follow that path, but it doesn't. It changes drastically to a more 'normal' and slow paced ballad. The special tone of Koda Kumi's voice is enhanced by this song's style and by the addition of a few instruments. The catchy hook mixed with the low voice of the singer is a perfect combination. This song could be qualified as relaxing, since the slow rhythm doesn't change, except for the bridge. A slightly melancholic song with a hint of sugar pop, it's a good example of what Koda Kumi can do.
The second track, called LOVE HOLIC, is way more bouncy than Kiseki. This song starts off very quickly with a catchy hook and a lively guitar that gives you the urge to get up and dance right away! The guitar helps create a lively atmosphere, making this song a very entertaining and pleasant track. A bridge made out entirely of guitar riffs gives a real kick to the song and even adds a little rock edge. This song will bring a smile to your face for the rest of the day.
Last but not least, Life starts with clapping that leads the song's tempo. The instruments mix well with it, and Koda Kumi sings in two completely different styles, showing off her talent. The English hook, very catchy as always, sticks to the style of the song. The rhythm changes a little bit at times, from fast to slow, but that doesn't hold the song back. It's an R'n'B track with a little pop/sugar added. The melody is a bit nostalgic, but it is still very joyful, and there is less clapping in the bridge, which is a perfect way to link everything.
The CDs end with the instrumental versions of the songs, which leave the sound of Koda Kumi's voice in your head. Overall a great single, it is well balanced and catchy as all of Koda Kumi's works will prove to be.
