Sugar - LAST ONE-MAN TOUR

Sugar made a final strong impact with their last live at Shibuya O-EAST on July 4th.

The large Shibuya O-EAST was full for Sugar's very last live, which would conclude the career of the well-known band. The concert began promptly, with the familiar SE of the band playing. The curtains opened to reveal the wide stage with a red carpet in the middle of it, and red curtains and glowing, large candelabras completed the opera theatre-style background.

One by one, the members came out on stage, as the masses screamed their names at the top of their lungs. atsuto walked out quietly and without excessive gestures, as opposed to SIZNA, who flew out onto the stage like a whirlwind, Shingo walked out coolly and bowed to the crowd. Loki appeared last and greeted the crowd, and the show started with the recently released [PARADISE]LOST. The next song, Blossom, started with Shingo's catchy bass melodies, to which Loki danced to from side to side. Even more movement was seen from the members during akai shita, as SIZNA played the guitar while hopping around on one leg and wriggling the other one in the air. He continued creeping around the stage for swim like a butterfly while Shingo stayed back, concentrating on the performance and throwing the occasional, blinding smile at the fans. atsuto supported Loki with his backing vocals.

The audience exploded with screams during the short pause, then the live continued with the darker and heavier scatter iN the depth. The mood was carried on through sabi, which started with atmospheric guitar and vocals. The other instruments flowed in later, and as the speed increased, the vocalist spun around the stage, then crawled around on his knees and performed sinister pantomimes. A smooth transition led into the more upbeat hone to hane, which spun out of control, getting faster and faster until it merged into kogoe yureru honoo. Distorted, almost post-rock-like guitar was played by SIZNA, who sometimes used his teeth.

Saluting the crowd, the guitarist stretched his arm out and started reciting a rapid monologue in a psychotic high-pitched voice. The crowd put their arms out all as one, leading, in the usual routine, to toganin no sora. The fans began to dance, and the members moved quickly around the stage. As some in the audience headbanged to the hot retsujou, azayaka naru himegoto wo, Loki threw his microphone cord like a lasso around SIZNA, who tried vainly to escape. Following was the rarely played nimphomania. Then, a little stage on the side of the hall was revealed, showing two violinists, and the crowd jumped to the pleasantly dissonant melodies of Memento Mori.

One by one, the members left, leaving only SIZNA behind on the dark stage. He sat down on a chair to play a lengthy solo on an acoustic guitar, and the melody had a Spanish feel to it. Eventually, atsuto and Shingo walked back onto the stage and joined the guitarist. He put on his electric guitar once again and led the band into hakujitsu ni dakareta itoshiki kage as the vocalist joined them on stage. Following was another soft and quiet song, Sleepy, which had the audience frozen. toikimeku shitsudo broke the ice, and Shingo and SIZNA came towards the edge of the stage as Loki danced erotically. Next, the keyboarder and saxophonist joined the smiling members for the brighter kanashimi ni nemuru hidamari and more upbeat Snow White. The violins joined in, intensifying the sound. tsuki ni naki asa wo warau hana to had the masses at a standstill once again with its soft melodies. The three members supported Loki at the end as the backing chorus. When the song ended, they moved smoothly on to Brand New World.

The members left the stage, but atsuto stayed behind the lit up drum set. With a calm expression on his face, the drummer performed a long and complicated solo, demonstrating his amazing coordination and impressing the audience. They exploded with applause and screams. After the drum solo, the band returned for malicious. It seemed they had recharged themselves during the short break, and they came out with fresh enthusiasm. During JAM, Loki sang on his knees to Shingo, who had a satisfied smile on his face. Then he went to the other side to flirt with the lively SIZNA. The crowd clapped to kunnou to yuuutsu ni oborete, then began screaming during afterglow. Some even headbanged to the fast beat of the energetic song.

One of the band's heaviest songs, jifu, had the whole hall headbanging and jumping to the violent melody. Loki sang while lying on the stage. Concluding the set was berry, one of the most memorable songs by Sugar. Loki exclaimed "I love you!" to the clapping crowd, and they enjoyed almost non-stop dancing, copying the moves the vocalist showed to them. The members, smiling widely, moved around the entire stage, then gathered in the middle and seemed to have a lot of fun. As the crowd applauded, the members bowed; Loki, blowing the crowd kisses and waving at them, left first. The others followed slowly after throwing some items to the crowd.

Shingo came out to meet the screams for an encore and thanked the crowd for the encore call and calling his name as well. He said that he would miss hearing it, and the audience only screamed his name louder. The bassist explained that it was his turn to play a solo, and after asking the audience their opinion on what he should do, he started to play his solo quietly, fluently switching between styles. He continued with atsuto and SIZNA, and the three smoothly transitioned into dansho to kuroneko. Loki joined in last, and the two support musicians played on the small stage. Encouraged by the vocalist, the fans clapped along to the jazzy rhythm of antlion, which was followed by the more upbeat jakou tadayou naka de, Loki's voice, despite having sung over thirty songs, was still going strong and filled with emotion.

During the MC, the vocalist joked about how SIZNA always distracted the crowd's attention in MCs when some people laughed and looked at the amusing guitarist. He also asked the fans to not look at his rather exposed stomach, which had been attracting quite a bit of attention at every live since the band changed to their new costumes. The audience chuckled in response. Loki went on to tell everyone something that even the other members did not know yet - the day before the live, he got hit by a car. However, the fact that just two months earlier, he had been in another accident and had talked about it during an MC on May 8, caused the audience to yell "not again!" Fortunately, Loki was unhurt, although his car bumper was quite damaged, and he interpreted the lucky repeat as a sign that maybe god didn't really want to see him. Finally, he noted that such an unconventional MC at a last live is a very "Loki" thing to do. The vocalist asked the crowd to heal his wounds with their love and keep the band company for a little longer.

Quiet guitar playing started aku no hanasaku yume no mata yume, and it evolved to a faster and catchier tune. Loki and SIZNA played a spontaneous pantomime; the guitarist first pushed away the vocalist, who was walking into him, then asked him to come closer. The whole thing looked so amusing that laughter could be heard in the audience. Next was yokusou, to which the members calmed down and the hall, lit up brightly, seemed frozen in time. "Thank you!" exclaimed Loki, and smiling, the band left the stage once again.

More encore calls got atsuto to come on stage. He greeted the screaming audience and introduced the support musicians who play both at their lives and in their recordings. He thanked them for all their hard work, and the other members followed. Once again, the crowd was urged to show their enthusiasm. The second encore started with biyaku and the vocalist shouting, "Oh baby, I love you!" Loki erotically sung to the smiling Shingo on all fours, then urged the crowd to headbang. The live continued onto another upbeat song, Ridicule.

The fans clapped their hands to inpain, and atsuto unexpectedly exclaimed into his microphone, "Sing with me!" The surprised fans followed his lead and sand along to the backing vocals, everyone present in the hall uniting in their excitement. "Thank you," the drummer concluded adorably. Loki then thanked the crowd and said that all they could do was create songs and write lyrics, but he was truly happy to be standing there and having the fans in front of him. Having expressed his gratitude, the vocalist announced the last song - tegami ni kaete. No movement could be seen during this quiet and enchanting song; the last performance of it was strong and touching. At times, Loki fought with his emotions and became choked with tears, but he pulled himself together and continued while doing his best. All of the members united to sing the last phrases of the song together.

Slowly, the members thanked the audience and left. The masses continued screaming for an encore, and all together, the four came out once again. Struggling, the vocalist thanked them and said that they would do one more song for the audience, so that they could become stronger too. Dokuhaku concluded Sugar's career, and snow fell on stage as the band put all their strength and their hearts into performing this quiet, mesmerizing song Their message touched every fan, moving many to tears.

"Thank you very much," Loki said over and over; he was on his knees, unable to move. Shingo could not look up and bowed low to the crowd, hanging his head for long moments. Then, pulling themselves together, the members greeted the crowd and prepared to leave. Loki and SIZNA linked hands, preparing to bow together, but the other two didn't notice and were leaving the stage. Loki had to tap Shingo on the shoulder, causing him to run after atsuto and fetch him back; it lightened the mood a bit. After they had all linked hands, the band stood with smiles on their faces and bowed to their fans. "Thank you! We were Sugar!" said Loki, and throwing their picks and other belongings into the crowd, the members slowly left the stage.

As the last one to leave, SIZNA paused near a microphone on his way off stage and said one last time, "Thank you." His natural voice, which he had always hidden behind a comical, high-pitched affectation, and this sudden sincerity left the biggest impact of all on the fans who attended Sugar's last show. With this last gesture, the emotional live - and also Sugar's five-year career - came to an end. Without a doubt, Sugar will not be forgotten by the numerous fans who attended the concert or by their fans around the globe.
