&[AND] is an unusual band with a very retro rock sound. Formed by guitarist and vocalist
OZA, female vocalist
935. and bassist
NKJM, the trio write and arrange all of their music to reflect their funky, offbeat selves. Their latest release,
PINK/Kirakiraboshi, serves as a sample of their developing style.
Pink starts with a psychedelic intro and a pounding synthesized bass. The lyrics are entirely in English, although not entirely comprehensible.
935., who has proven capable of
Whitney Houston-esque vocals in the past, croons and wails in a high register that underscores the underground club vibe of the song, but it’s not exactly easy on the ears.
OZA switches off with her in a falsetto during the verses, and he joins
NKJM as background vocals during the chorus. The growling melody is offset by their bright voices, and the entire song has an oldies feel that makes it unique and interesting.
The second track is
&’s take on the classic children’s song
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. A mid-tempo, swinging beat and cheerful clapping make
Kirakiraboshi highly enjoyable.
935.’s voice brings to mind
Janis Joplin but without the sandpaper edge; her voice is smooth and piercing. Towards the end of the song, there is a nice guitar solo, and
Kirakiraboshi ends on synth notes sparkling over a ringing electric guitar.
It’s hard to place
& in a specific time period as their music draws from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Whatever the era,
PINK/Kirakiraboshi is unapologetically carefree and proves that oldies pop-rock doesn’t have to remain in the past!
The lyrics for both songs and their respective music videos can be found at
OZA’s website. The single is also available for download at
