Hana (Regular Edition)

ALICE NINE.

Hana is the only single Alice Nine put out in 2009, but it seems to be enough to tide over fans until the new year.

The title track starts off with a buzzing snyth intro that sets up the dark, nightclub vibe. A mid-tempo dance beat is quickly established, and then the guitars kick in, giving the song a more forceful presence. Shou’s voice slips smoothly through the prowling, edgy melody of the verses. In contrast, the chorus has a richer, warmer feeling. It’s easy to picture yourself dancing amongst falling glitter to Hana; it’s what the song seems made for.

The second track, SLEEPWALKER, opens with a creepy, haunting intro. There’s some call and response play between the keyboard and guitar, creating an atmospheric mood. Then the song really gets started with heavier guitar playing and a slow, calculated beat. In some parts, it actually reminds a little of the GazettE’s Chizuru. Shou’s soft vocals match the eerie, dream-like quality of the song. The chorus again provides contrast by being a little brighter and more positive. SLEEPWALKER is definitely one of Alice Nine’s most interesting songs to date. It’s not quite like any of their other songs, and the melancholy yet somewhat sinister emotions displayed make it beautiful.

High And Low is the CD-only bonus track, and sadly it is the least memorable song from this single. On first listen, it sounds like a rougher, slightly faster reflection of Hana. However, it’s still too slow to really stand out. The instrumental break is great, but the whole song could use the same energy. If Alice Nine had revved it up more, High And Low could have been a more impressive song. However, though it remains a decent song, it won’t leave a lasting impression.

Despite only putting out one album and single in 2009, Alice Nine has been busy. They’ve landed their own Internet show on Nico Nico Douga and have been holding lives throughout the year. However, Hana can only satisfy the fans for so long; we’re looking forward to some new music in the coming year!
