CHATMONCHY

Any fan of SID should know that their vocalist Mao likes Chatmonchy, and with good reason! The three ladies of Chatmonchy consistently release fun, upbeat and sometimes kitschy pop-rock songs. Although vocalist Eriko Hashimoto’s high, girlish voice may turn some people off, her singing never clashes with the music, so don’t pass judgment before giving the band a chance. Chatmonchy’s single of 2009 is a good place to start if you’re just getting into the band.

Last Love Letter is a bass-centric song with skipping drum beats. The mid-tempo track is built on the pulsing bass line, and Eriko’s voice soars clearly and powerfully over the soft background. Crash cymbals counterbalance the low beat from the bass, and the guitar holds everything together. The gentle melody creates the image of a rolling landscape; overall, the song is full of poignant emotion and is a lovely composition.

The second track, Katamichikippu, is lighter and opens with Eriko’s voice. Guitar arpeggios paint the background before soft drumming joins in. Slightly slower in pace, the vocals are the main focus and carry the song. Eriko’s voice is filtered, sounding flat and muted at some parts and distantly echoing at others. The guitar solo is a simple affair, lending to the wistful atmosphere of the song, and it’s a pleasant song to listen to.

Good luck my sister!! is the third track off the single, and it’s a very happy song about a wedding. Bouncy, fast, simple and sweet, the cheerful melody will leave you in a good mood and full of energy.

If you’re interested in hearing more of Chatmonchy but aren’t quite ready to dive into a full album, another single worth checking out is Kaze fukeba koi. It contains some of the more playful, high-energy songs not included on Last Love Letter. However, Last Love Letter will give you a taste of what to expect from the band, and as they’re making the US debut soon, you’ll want to be prepared!
