Mugen Loop - heidi.

Angura-kei indie group heidi. released their eighth single on August 25, 2010. Mugen Loop has been used as the second ending theme for the anime “Kaichou wa Maid-sama."

Mugen Loop opens with four whole notes of drums before a slam of guitar. The way guitarist Nao and bassist Kousuke work together is outstanding. Both guitarist and bassist stand out on their own in the track as their combined technique has a raw but refined sound. Yoshiko sways and jumps between notes in 4/4 time and catches the listener’s attention as the melody, sounding like something a US-based audience would appreciate more, rushes between notes. After being played a few times, Mugen Loop is actually quite a simple song: there are no synthesizers or keyboard that overpower the vocalist, just hard work and dedication.

Kasumi, the B-side track, is just as passionate and straightforward as Mugen Loop. The vocal line floats pleasantly above the heavy guitar and additionally, Yoshiko’s sultry voice is best suited towards a darker genre. There’s a moment where a harmonization line close to the end of the song slides into the listener’s ears, giving the track a pleasant atmosphere.

A second B-side, Daze, is featured on the regular edition and takes a darker, edgier tone, but not by much. Set in a minor key, Daze contains the pain one may feel but plays it out in a much more sinister manner than the track Pain actually does. Much of the vocal line follows the guitar quite closely in Pain, which is available on the limited edition in place of Daze. The bass line really shines in this track, as do each of the members, but the emotion felt from the track almost idealizes the idea of pain and letting oneself be free of regret.

The limited edition contains the PV and making of for Mugen Loop as well as a different third track, Pain in place of Daze, which can be found on the regular edition. Both editions of the single include the karaoke versions of Mugen Loop.
