Is this music a new kind of martial art? It’s hard to tell, but it’s probably easier to describe the music of DETROX as a new martial art rather than categorizing it as heavy rock.

Their ring was the live house, and in one corner were HIDEKI and K-A-Z, with the audience in the other. With the words “Let’s see just how much you guys can rock, how wild you can get and just how far you can go”, they began a win lose battle sure to be great fun for both sides.

Needless to say, this fight in Shibuya BOXX was as hot as their other fights. The moment that DETROX appeared on the stage, the audience (both male and female) let out wild screams, which DETROX seemed to take in stride. From their entrance the band set the pace for the evening, and the volume meter was at its highest. As usual their performance was full of technique, with HIDEKI using his microphone and K-A-Z using his guitar almost like weapons, working up the audience.

However, they didn’t just exert their strength over the audience; they also stole their hearts minds with sentimental, mellow songs. HIDEKI used his voice to penetrate their hearts, sending his emotion with his honest words and moving each listener to the bone. This may be DETROX’s biggest weapon used in this kind of arena.

Towards the end HIDEKI addressed the audience in his almost awkwardly direct way: “I can never remember the English lyrics. (smile) I'm just not that smart. That's why I'm doing rock music. But I’m not a just any idiot!”

With that they began their encore. To borrow HIDEKI’s words, he isn’t just any idiot and he isn’t just any vocalist. There aren't many others in the music scene who can express weakness, sadness and pain so aptly and in a way that moves so many people.

DETROX, with their English lyrics, can stand along with other Western rock music, yet they are still able to express the subtleties of the Japanese heart, making them a truly great band, one that can win over any audience in any ring.
